Behind Broken Walls, Haiti
Two months after the January 2010 earthquake, I travelled to Haiti as a photojournalist and relief worker, documenting the lives of those displaced by the disaster. Over the course of three years, I created a series of images and three short films, that documented the lives of three families during the aftermath. The work revealed the process of moving forward and rebuilding their lives after the disaster.
I became a part of my subject’s every day dialogue living with them in their homes, which helped me to convey a level of intimacy and a shared humanity. We are not so different. We are connected—we desire to be understood, to be seen, and to belong. To have a home surrounded by people who love us. It is this understanding which moves us forward.
